בחברה המודרנית, תפקידם של אנשי בריאות הנפש לטפל בתחושות מצוקה של האדם המביע אותן בצורות שונות ומצוקות הקשורות לאינטרנט בכלל זה, אולם לייחס לטכנולוגיות האינטרנט את הגורם הישיר למצוקה אין לה, בינתיים, על מה להסתמך. שכן, ל"התמכרות לאינטרנט" לא הוגדרו עדיין קריטריונים קליניים או סממנים פתולוגיים. היא איננה נחשבת כהפרעה נפשית ואיננה מוכרת כמחלה על ידי המערכת הרפואית.
